Cast iron gates, gravel
driveway, Portland façade, portico, central
staircase, octagonal room, tiled hallways,
marble fireplaces.
There is not so much that it
is limiting, but there’s enough to add
magnificence to whatever décor or use to which
you apply the building.
The greater the statement you
want to make the better, this is not a project
that forgives trepidation.
Space in crowds
One of the few remaining Palladian Palaces by
Matthew Brettingham the Elder forms the
centrepiece of this outstanding freehold estate
in the heart of Mayfair, little has changed for
this historically significant structure in the
last 250 years: it has remained the grand
statement it always was, still staring across
the beautiful expanse of Green Park to
Buckingham Palace, quietly holding court in the
very heart of one of the greatest cities in the
world.
Only now it is rare, unique and, lest we forget,
offers 22,000m2 of beautifully proportioned
internal space.
So while the exterior brings to mind all the
greatness of old England, the interior is open
to persuasion.
It would be easier to think of what the building
could not be used for than to list its
possibilities.
